Holy Ghost Church, Denver
The Holy Ghost Church in Denver is a historic Catholic parish with deep roots in the city's religious history. The parish's origins can be traced back to the 1860 construction of Saint Mary’s Cathedral, Denver's first Catholic church. In 1905, with the establishment of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Colfax and Logan, a new downtown parish was formed under the title of the Holy Ghost, initially using the old cathedral as its place of worship. The original Church of the Holy Ghost, now known as the Helen Bonfils Parish Center, was dedicated on December 14, 1924. However, the current church building was not dedicated until July 8, 1943.
Architecturally, the Holy Ghost Church is a striking blend of Spanish and Italian Renaissance styles. Its design includes delicate interior details and a striking exterior that contrasts with Denver's modern glass architecture, making it a notable landmark in the city.
In 2001, the Oblates of the Virgin Mary, a religious congregation, began staffing the church, continuing its mission of spiritual guidance. The church is dedicated to helping individuals on their spiritual journey, offering various parish activities, including social ministry, religious education, and Bible studies. Additionally, the church remains committed to providing shelter, food, and care to those in need, reflecting its long-standing tradition of service to the community.
