1111 Main, Kansas City
1111 Main, formerly known as Town Pavilion, is a striking 38-story skyscraper located at the northeast corner of 12th and Main Streets in Downtown Kansas City. Standing at 180.1 meters (591 feet), it is the second-tallest habitable building in Kansas City and the third-tallest in Missouri. Completed in 1986, this towering structure stands on the former sites of Kline's Department Store and Kresge's Dime Store. It thoughtfully incorporates the historic Harzfeld's Department Store and the Boley Building, blending Kansas City's architectural heritage with modern design.
Originally constructed as the AT&T Town Pavilion, 1111 Main was built as the Southwest Regional Headquarters for AT&T, which remains a tenant despite the company's downsizing in the late 1990s. Throughout its history, the building has housed prominent tenants like Transamerica and Bank Midwest, with its name and signage changing hands accordingly. Today, its main occupants include Transamerica, Bank Midwest, and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
1111 Main is architecturally defined by its granite, glass, and steel exterior, with over 90% covered in dark-blue glazed glass. Its distinctive truss roof gives it a "glass cathedral" look in a Latin Cross design, adding a mysterious touch to the skyline. This blend of historic preservation, modern design, and prime location makes it a key landmark in Kansas City.
