155–158 North Street. Wetherspoon, Brighton

The building at 155–158 North Street in Brighton is a significant historical and architectural landmark within the city. Constructed between 1921 and 1923, it originally served as a branch of the National Provincial Bank. The site, which previously housed several shops and the offices of the Brighton Gazette, was acquired by the bank between 1916 and 1920. The building was designed by the prominent local architectural firm Clayton & Black, known for their versatile work across Brighton.

The building's design is noted for its King Louis XVI-style façade, which has been praised for its "good attention to detail." This style choice, along with the building's historical role in Brighton's commercial development, contributed to its listing as a Grade II building by English Heritage, recognizing its architectural and historical significance.

Over time, the bank became part of the National Westminster Bank network following the merger of National Provincial and Westminster Bank. In 2011, the building took on a new life when it was converted into a J D Wetherspoon pub, becoming the company's second pub in central Brighton. Today, it stands as a key component of North Street, a vital commercial artery in Brighton since the 18th century.
