30 Saint Mary Axe (The Gherkin), London

30 Saint Mary Axe (The Gherkin), London

People often respond with confusion when asked about Saint Mary Axe, but if you mention 'The Swiss Re Building', some recognition might kick in. However, if you refer to it as the 'Gherkin' or the 'Egg', everyone instantly knows what you're talking about. Designed by Norman Foster and completed in 2003, this glass-diamond-clad creation has become one of the most beloved modern skyscrapers in London's City in the 21st century.

Londoners appreciate its playful and unique shape, although it is now surrounded by taller skyscrapers that it played a part in inspiring. Officially named 30 Saint Mary Axe, the Gherkin stands on the site where the IRA bombing in 1992 destroyed the old Baltic Exchange, resulting in three casualties, a tragedy commemorated on a nearby wall.

Standing at 590 feet (180 meters), it's actually quite tall, but at ground level, it appears unassuming. You can enjoy a meal or a drink at the rooftop restaurant and bar, marvel at its aesthetic design, or admire its efficient energy-saving structure that employs steel and glass in a 5° rotation from floor to floor to maximize light capture and minimize wind chill. As a matter of fact, the Gherkin consumes less than half the energy of its neighboring buildings.

Why You Should Pay a Visit:
An architectural masterpiece, deservedly listed in the book '1001 Buildings You Must See Before You Die'.

Tip:
For fantastic views, head to Tower Bridge or the Sky Garden. If you want to visit the Gherkin or dine at its top-floor restaurant, you must be invited, as free entry is not an option. To avoid the hassle of providing proof of identity at the front door, it's best to take photos from the plaza outside the building.
