Abbazia di San Pietro (Abbey of St. Peter), Assisi
The monastery of Saint Peter in Assisi has a rich history dating back to the 10th century, with its current building constructed by Cistercian monks and consecrated in 1253. After a period as a parish church, it was revived as a monastery in 1613 by Pope Paul V.
The façade, completed in 1268, is a fine example of Romanesque architecture, featuring three entries surmounted by Gothic rose windows in the second tier. Stone lions flank the central portal, adding to its grandeur.
Restored in 1954, the interior features a central nave and two aisles in the Romanesque style, with Gothic influences. The aisles house 14th-century tombs and frescoes, including the tomb of Don Antonio Pennacchi, known locally as "the Ave Maria priest". Adjacent to his tomb is a 12th-century fresco depicting a young Saint Benedict, flanked by Saints Cyril and Methodius.
Inside the entrance, to the left, is the Chapel of the Rosary, featuring an altar rebuilt in 1831 and a painting of Our Lady of the Rosary. The high altar houses the urn of Saint Vittorino, a 3rd-century bishop of Assisi and patron of the diocese, along with relics of other martyrs. The sarcophagus of Saint Vittorino and his fellow martyrs are located in the crypt.
