Abdij van Vlierbeek (Vlierbeek Abbey), Leuven

Vlierbeek Abbey boasts a rich history dating back to its founding as a priory in 1127 by Affligem Abbey, under the patronage of Godfrey I of Louvain. Throughout the centuries, this Benedictine monastery has weathered fires, conflicts, and reconstructions, ultimately achieving abbey status in the late 12th century.

In 1170, a Romanesque stone church replaced the original clay structure, symbolizing the abbey's evolution. Despite facing the flames of William of Orange's troops in 1572, Vlierbeek Abbey endured, undergoing reconstruction in two phases: first from 1642 to the early 18th century and later from 1776 to 1796, under the guidance of architect Laurent-Benoît Dewez.

The French Revolution brought tumultuous change, suppressing the abbey in 1796, with monks expelled and assets auctioned in 1798. Although a brief revival was attempted in 1801, the monastic community dwindled until the last monk's passing in 1838.

The former abbey church transitioned into the parish church for Kessel-Lo, with further parish divisions in 1877 and 1900. After a rural history, post-World War II population growth led to the establishment of the "abbey school."

Today, Chiro Vlierbeek, a Catholic youth group, thrives within the abbey's walls. Its Neo-classical church, designed by renowned architect Laurent-Benoît Dewez, features an octagonal central structure with a majestic cupola and a luminous interior. Notable figures find their rest in the churchyard.

The church continues to host weekend masses, welcoming devotees and curious visitors. On special occasions, the abbot's lodgings offer a glimpse into the abbey's history, while the remaining structures remain privately owned, preserving Vlierbeek Abbey's heritage for future generations.
