Ada Ciganlija Beach, Belgrade (must see)
Ada Ciganlija, an elongated river island located on the fourth kilometer of the Sava River from its confluence with the Danube River, is one of Belgrade's most cherished and popular recreational spots. The name "Ciganlija" may come from "single" (island) and "lia" (underwater land) in Celtic, showing the Sava River's changing water levels. Low water levels create "Singa," high levels "Lia," merging into "Ciganlija." In 1821, Prince Miloš Obrenović declared the island a state and national good, a status it maintains today.
Spanning a total area of 800 hectares, including Ada Medjica, Ada Ciganlija is renowned for its dense deciduous forests, glades, and meadows. It is the largest, most beautiful, and most visited resort in Belgrade, attracting over one million visitors each summer. Often dubbed the "Belgrade Sea," it is famous for its well-maintained beaches, diverse sports facilities, bars, restaurants, and a myriad of activities.
Ada Ciganlija is also a haven for wildlife, hosting endangered species like small cormorants, wild ducks, gulls, pheasants, and quails. It is one of the few places in Belgrade where visitors can observe deer and rabbits in their natural habitat. Fishermen frequent the Ada Safari Lake, further adding to the island's appeal.
The beach around Sava Lake is among the largest and most beautiful artificial lake beaches in Europe, equipped with comprehensive infrastructural facilities. The lake offers ideal conditions for swimming, boating, kayaking, water polo, diving, windsurfing, and more. Over 50 outdoor sports courts are available, including a golf course and a ski lift. For thrill-seekers, there are extreme sports options such as bungee jumping, wall-climbing, and paintball.
Ada Ciganlija is not just a natural retreat but also a vibrant cultural and entertainment hub, particularly in summer. It hosts numerous events featuring renowned writers, entertainers, cultural clubs, choirs, and orchestras. The gastronomic scene is rich, with dozens of rustic-style restaurants, raft restaurants, and houses on the water, preserving Belgrade's bohemian traditions. The nightlife is lively, with bars that remain popular year-round.
A notable attraction at the lake's entrance is a collection of stone sculptures called "Stone Town," created by sculptor Ratko Vulanović. Another iconic feature is the water fountain in Sava Lake, reminiscent of Geneva's famous fountain. Lit at night, it is one of the many attractions of the "Belgrade Sea," enhancing the island's enchanting atmosphere.
