Aeroseum, Gothenburg
Aeroseum, located in Säve just north of Gothenburg, is a distinctive Flight Experience Center that occupies a space steeped in Cold War history. Housed within the former Göta air flotilla's (F 9) rock slopes, Aeroseum presents an expansive narrative of aviation's development, encompassing civilian and military advancements, as well as national and international milestones, from the mythical days of Icarus to the modern era of spaceflight.
This unique experience center is situated in a previously classified mountain hangar facility at the Säve airport's military part, the Säve depot. Built between 1950 and 1955, this facility was the first of its kind designed to withstand an atomic bomb, reflecting the era's heightened security concerns. Today, no longer shrouded in secrecy, Aeroseum opens its doors to the public, offering a glimpse into a pivotal period of global tension and technological progress.
Aeroseum operates under the auspices of a foundation and has flourished thanks to the support from SFHM/Statens Försvarshistoriska Museum, various partners, and largely its own funding efforts. It is not only a museum but a dynamic venue that annually hosts events like the Gothenburg Model and Hobby Fair and the Children's Flying Weekend, attracting enthusiasts and families alike.
The collection at Aeroseum is notably extensive, featuring a wide array of helicopters and aircraft that illustrate the technological evolution and rich history of aviation. This makes Aeroseum not just a museum but a vibrant educational and experiential hub that connects visitors with the past, present, and future of flight in a setting that once played a critical role in Sweden's defense strategy.
