Afrikahaus (Africa House), Hamburg

Africa House (Afrikahaus) in Hamburg is a notable historical and architectural landmark. Located in the Neustadt quarter, this office building was constructed by the esteemed local architect Martin Haller, known for designing significant structures such as the Hamburg city hall (Rathaus) and the Leiszhalle concert venue. Completed in 1899, Africa House originally served as the headquarters of the C. Woermann Trading Company, a prestigious entity in Hamburg's shipping industry during the peak of Atlantic trade in the late 18th century. This company was among several in Hamburg, such as Hamburg Süd and the Hamburg American Line (now part of Hapag-Lloyd), that contributed to the city’s wealth through successful shipping ventures.

The building was aptly named Africa House due to the Woermann company’s extensive trade connections with Africa, a history that is richly documented in the artwork and decorations within the building. Noteworthy features include a statue of an African warrior by Walter Sintenis and a detailed mosaic showcasing the company flag. The interior is further adorned with two large bronze elephants in the entrance foyer, reinforcing its exotic theme. The building’s exterior is subtly decorated with green and white patterns, enhancing its African-inspired aesthetic.

In 1972, Africa House was granted listed status, recognizing its historical and cultural significance. While it continues to function as a private office space, it also opens its doors to large groups for guided tours, allowing the public to explore its rich history and unique architectural features.
