Albert School, Saskatoon

Albert School, Saskatoon

The Albert School in Saskatoon is a striking example of early 20th-century educational architecture, built in 1911 and now operating as the Albert Community Centre. Located on Clarence Avenue South in the Varsity View neighborhood, the building was designated a Municipal Heritage Property in 1983, with protection limited to its bold, brick-and-granite exterior.

Designed by David Webster, the official architect of the Saskatoon Public School Board from 1910 to 1914, the Albert School embodies the Collegiate Gothic style, with strong British influences. Its three-story structure features symmetrical lines, arched mullioned windows, and a central tower-details that echo the solid, imposing presence of traditional British institutions. Notably, the school’s uppermost floor once housed the caretaker, who maintained the coal-fired heating system and had panoramic views of the growing city.

Named after Prince Albert, the school was part of a broader expansion plan that saw ten major schools built to meet the city's rising educational needs. Albert School was considered a near-twin of King Edward School, which was demolished in 1979.

Beyond academics, Albert School played a central role in the city’s athletic life, hosting lacrosse and hockey games. It closed in 1978 due to declining enrollment and briefly hosted the French School of Saskatoon (L’École Française de Saskatoon) before transitioning into a community space. Thanks to advocacy by the Saskatoon Heritage Society and local groups, the site was preserved and repurposed as a hub for arts, writing, and public programs.

In 1986, the school was honored with a City of Saskatoon Heritage Award for the restoration of a public building. Today, the Albert School remains a beloved historical landmark, symbolizing the city’s early commitment to education and community spirit.
