Albuquerque Biological Park, Albuquerque
The Albuquerque Biological Park, also known as ABQ BioPark, is an environmental museum situated in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It comprises four distinct facilities, namely the ABQ BioPark Aquarium, ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden, ABQ BioPark Zoo, and Tingley Beach.
The ABQ BioPark Aquarium boasts a vast ocean tank with a capacity of 285,000 US gallons (1,080,000 liters), which features various Gulf of Mexico saltwater species found in estuaries, surf zones, shallow waters, coral reefs, and oceans. Additionally, it showcases numerous other exhibits.
The ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden spans over 36 acres (15 hectares) and features a 10,000-square-foot (930 square meters) glass conservatory, housing plants from the desert and Mediterranean climate zones.
The ABQ BioPark Zoo, on the other hand, covers an area of 64 acres (26 hectares) and features over 250 species of exotic and native animals. These include Asian elephants, reticulated giraffes, African lions, Malayan tigers, snow leopards, polar bears, hippos, gorillas, chimpanzees, Hartmann's mountain zebras, as well as unusual animals like spotted hyenas, southern white rhinos, Tasmanian devils, wombats, and African wild dogs. The zoo also boasts various bird species ranging from storks and eagles to roadrunners.
Tingley Beach offers numerous amenities, including a fishing lake, a model boating lake, picnic areas, a narrow gauge railroad, and paths. The ABQ BioPark is a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and maintains accreditation from it.
The BioPark train, a popular attraction, has been out of operation for nearly two years. However, visitors can now enjoy the new electric tram that will transport approximately 60 people from the zoo to the aquarium in a matter of minutes.
