All Saints Church, Swansea

All Saints Church, Swansea

All Saints Church, located in the heart of Mumbles, Swansea, is a historic Anglican church within the Parish of Oystermouth, part of the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon. Believed to have been a site of worship for over a thousand years, the church has deep historical roots, with its first recorded mention dating back to 1141. Built in the mid-12th century, the church features a blend of medieval architecture and modern renovations. Its Grade II listed status, awarded in 1952, reflects the significance of its medieval fabric, including early features such as the piscina, font, and impressive 20th-century stained glass.

The church has undergone several phases of construction, most notably in 1915 when a new nave, chancel, and north aisle were added. The former chancel was transformed into the Lady Chapel, adorned with oak panels carved in 1937 by the Revd J. D. Davies. One of the church's standout features is its collection of 20th-century gifts, including the Rood Screen and East Window, as well as the poignant Lifeboat Memorial Window. Installed in 1977, the window commemorates the tragic Mumbles lifeboat disaster of 1947, in which an entire crew of eight lifeboatmen lost their lives. The churchyard also holds memorials to the victims of this disaster and is the final resting place of notable figures, including English doctor and editor Thomas Bowdler.

As a lively spiritual home for the community, All Saints Church continues to welcome believers, standing as a testament to centuries of worship and local heritage. Its proximity to Oystermouth Castle further enhances its significance as a historical landmark in the region.
