All Saints' Episcopal Church, Austin

All Saints' Episcopal Church, also known as All Saints' Chapel in Austin, was established in 1899. This Episcopal parish church is situated on the periphery of the University of Texas at Austin campus, fostering a deep-rooted relationship with the university's students and faculty.

The church's inception can be traced back to the endeavors of Episcopal Bishop George Herbert Kinsolving. It was under his guidance that the chapel came into being. Notably, Bishop Kinsolving's crypt is located beneath the church, marking his lasting legacy within the parish.

The foundation of the church was laid on June 17, 1899, and it opened its doors for the first service on November 8, 1900. The consecration and dedication of the church as All Saints' Chapel occurred on May 8, 1901. This marked the beginning of its long-standing service to the community.

Architecturally, All Saints' Episcopal Church is a testament to traditional Christian church design, featuring a cruciform layout with a nave, transept, and chancel. A distinctive feature is its square, steepled two-story bell tower, positioned at the northwest corner, slightly off the main axis. The church's exterior combines gray limestone with smooth-faced stone accents, featuring a slate roof on the tower and nave for added appeal.

The building is designed in the Gothic Revival style, characterized by shallow buttresses, steep gables, and tall lancet windows, contributing to its majestic and historical ambiance. The original architect of the church was A. O. Watson. In 1939, the church underwent an expansion, thoughtfully designed by Marvin Eickenroht to maintain the Gothic Revival style and harmonize with the existing structure.
