Almaty Zoo, Almaty
The Almaty Zoo, located in Almaty, is a state-run zoological park, recognized as one of the largest and oldest in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Being a member of the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EARAZA), it emphasizes its commitment to animal conservation and regional education.
Throughout its history, the Almaty Zoo has continually expanded its diverse collection of animals. By 2005, it housed an impressive array of 523 species and 3,657 specimens, covering mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates. This collection underscores the zoo's dedication to preserving wildlife. By 2006, the collection grew to over 400 species and about 5,000 specimens, with a focus on species vulnerable or endangered, as noted in the Red Book of Kazakhstan and the Red Book of IUCN, CIS.
A significant event in recent history was the passing of Alkor, a polar bear who had become a symbol of the zoo. Alkor died on December 8, 2020, at the age of 31, following a decline in health over the previous two months. His loss was deeply felt as he had been a cherished resident since arriving from Kaliningrad in 1990.
As of the beginning of 2014, the zoo housed 4,768 specimens across 330 species, reflecting its commitment to providing a sanctuary for various animal life. By 2015, the collection had grown to include 345 species and 5,428 specimens, demonstrating ongoing efforts to enhance biodiversity.
Currently, there are over 350 species and approximately 6,000 distinct animals housed in the zoo. The facility enjoys significant patronage and is cherished by the community, especially during the holiday season.

Almaty Introduction Walking Tour
Nursultan Nazarbayev, the former (and the first) President of Kazakhstan, once remarked: "Almaty is the pearl of Kazakhstan, the most beautiful city in Central Asia." Indeed, the country's largest metropolis, Almaty is like a butterfly that has emerged from its cocoon, spreading its wings and soaring towards the sky at the foothills of the Tien Shan Mountains.
