Alter Synagogenplatz (Old Synagogue Square), Heidelberg

Alter Synagogenplatz (Old Synagogue Square), Heidelberg

The place where the Heidelberg Synagogue once stood, erected in 1877 and tragically destroyed during Kristallnacht ("Night of the Broken Glass") in 1938, now serves as a poignant memorial honoring the memory of the local Jewish community lost during the Second World War.

Following its reconstruction and dedication in 2001, the site features several poignant elements: memorial plaques bearing the names of those arrested, deported, and murdered; the outline of the synagogue's walls rendered in white marble; the entrance and windows delineated in grey granite; twelve sandstone cubes symbolizing both the pews and the twelve tribes of Israel; and a marble stone platform marking the spot where the Torah ark once stood.
