Amsterdam Sauer Museum, Rio de Janeiro
The Amsterdam Sauer Museum is situated just a block away from Praca de Paz. This museum houses the personal collection of its founder, Mr. Jules Roger Sauer, and showcases a diverse range of uncut gemstones and gems in various colors, alongside award-winning jewelry pieces. Additionally, the museum also serves as a store where you can find a substantial selection of cut gemstones and jewelry available for purchase.
Established in 1989, this museum played a crucial role in preserving the history of Brazilian gemology. It currently houses an impressive collection of approximately three thousand gem-related items. Among these valuable exhibits is the sole replica of the Imperial Crown of D. Pedro II, a highly significant piece in Brazilian jewelry history.
Some of the pieces on display at the museum have earned recognition in the Guinness Book of World Records due to their immense size and rarity. For instance, visitors can marvel at the largest rough alexandrite ever discovered globally, weighing an astonishing 122,400 carats (equivalent to 24.48 kilograms), originally sourced from the Jaquetó district in southern Bahia. You can also find a transparent topaz weighing 68 kilograms, making it one of the largest of its kind in the world, a 64-kilogram transparent quartz cluster, and rough rubellites extracted from the Jonas mine, which is considered one of the most significant gem discoveries globally.
The museum's scenographic displays transport visitors back in time to the locations where these precious gems formed millions of years ago, offering insights into the extraction process and enhancing the overall fascination of the experience.
