Anfiteatro Romano (Roman Amphitheater), Assisi

Anfiteatro Romano (Roman Amphitheater), Assisi

The Roman Amphitheater of Assisi, standing close to one of the city's gateways, is a testament to ancient history, though little remains of its original grandeur. What survives is primarily an arch constructed from travertine wedges. Dating back to the early 1st century AD, the amphitheater once featured two tiers of seating steps, some of which are still visible today. Although much of its elliptical shape has faded over time, you can still trace its outline between the garden wall and the medieval buildings that now occupy the space once filled by spectators.
