Ankara Ethnography Museum, Ankara
The Ethnography Museum of Ankara holds a special place as Turkey's first museum, conceived and constructed under the guidance of Atatürk, the revered leader of the nation. Designed by the renowned architect Arif Hikmet Koyunoğlu, this museum stands as a testament to the architectural brilliance of the Republican era. Initially inaugurated on July 18, 1930, the museum remained open until November 1938 when it briefly served as the temporary resting place for Atatürk. Subsequently, the Ethnography Museum of Ankara reopened to the public during the International Museums Week, from October 6th to 14th, 1956.
Within its walls, the museum houses an extensive collection that showcases the ethnographic heritage of the diverse peoples who have inhabited Anatolia. Visitors can explore a wide range of exhibits, including folk costumes, jewelry, traditional tools from various Anatolian regions, exquisite examples of Ottoman calligraphy, Turkish tile and glass art, as well as exceptional metalwork and wooden artifacts.
The Ethnography Museum also boasts a remarkable collection of carpets and kilims from renowned weaving centers like Uşak, Bergama, Kula, Milas, Ladik, Karaman, Niğde, and Kırşehir. Additionally, the museum hosts a specialized library dedicated to Anatolian ethnography and folklore, offering a wealth of resources related to the history of art.
