Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Detroit
The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Detroit is a cornerstone of Michigan’s Greek Orthodox community, steeped in history and cultural significance. Often compared to a "mini Sagrada Familia" for its extended and unfinished construction timeline, the Cathedral reflects the resilience and dedication of Detroit’s Hellenic community.
Founded on March 25, 1910, as Michigan’s first Greek Orthodox church, the Evangelismos Theotokou Church served Detroit’s Greek immigrants, especially from Sparta, building its first church in 1913 and operating a parochial school until 1931. Renamed the Central Greek Orthodox Church Evangelismos in 1949, it became a Cathedral in 1962.
The Cathedral’s current site on East Lafayette Street was acquired in 1966, and construction began shortly thereafter. The architectural vision, designed by John W. Loizon and inspired by the Church of Saint Andrew in Petras, Greece, included twin towers and white and black marble finishes. However, financial constraints meant that only a simplified version of the design could be realized. The new church was constructed in phases, with the congregation initially using the basement for services beginning in 1968.
Adhering to Byzantine tradition, the Cathedral’s exterior is austere, with its grandeur reserved for the richly decorated interior. Central to the design is the iconostasis, a screen adorned with sacred icons that separates the nave from the sanctuary. The dome’s interior features an awe-inspiring representation of Christ Pantokrator, reinforcing the spiritual and artistic traditions of Orthodox Christianity.
