Anosy Lake, Antananarivo

Anosy Lake, Antananarivo

Lake Anosy (Lac Anosy), an artificial, heart-shaped lake, graces the southern part of Antananarivo, Madagascar’s capital. Originally a swamp, it was transformed under the direction of Scottish missionary James Cameron in 1830 during the reign of Radama I. Surrounded by the vibrant neighborhoods of Ampefiloha, Isoraka, and Mahamasina, Anosy stands as both a historical landmark and a place of somber beauty.

The lake’s most distinctive feature is the War Memorial (Monument aux Morts), a large golden angel statue erected by the French in 1927. Created by sculptor Barberis and architect Perrin, the angel honors Malagasy soldiers who died in World War I, holding a laurel branch and wreath as symbols of peace and remembrance. This monument rests on an island at the lake's center, connected to the shore by an isthmus, and has served various roles over the years—from a blacksmith workshop to a gunpowder store for the city’s protection.

In October and November, purple jacaranda blooms frame the lake, creating a scene of lush color that draws visitors. Every June 26th, the lake also becomes a central gathering point for Independence Day fireworks, a vivid spectacle against the twilight sky.

While the lake suffers from pollution and safety concerns, it continues to capture the spirit of Antananarivo, with locals sometimes seen fishing or washing along its banks. For those hoping to admire Lake Anosy, the best views are from the hills of Haute-Ville, where its iconic heart shape and historic charm are best appreciated from a distance.
