Anshe Sfard Synagogue, New Orleans

Founded by Hasidic Jews from Lithuania, Anshe Sfard's Modern Orthodox congregation is housed in a 1925 historic building with a distinctive architectural style, featuring a barrel-vaulted ceiling ribbed with beams studded by electric light bulbs—a design trend inspired by the novelty of incandescent lighting at the time. Recently designated as a National Historic Landmark, it showcases a brick Rundbogenstil exterior complemented by triple-arched Neo-Byzantine doors.

While the synagogue's Torah scrolls were rescued during Hurricane Katrina, the building itself was damaged and did not reopen its doors until 2006. Located in the picturesque Garden District, a short walk from downtown hotels, it now welcomes visitors from near and far to attend participate in Shabbat and festival services held throughout the year.
