Arkansas Supreme Court, Little Rock
The Arkansas Supreme Court or Justice Building in Little Rock is a landmark institution of the state's judiciary. This historic site not only serves as the highest court in Arkansas but also played a role in the early legal career of Bill Clinton, who studied law and served as the state's Attorney General before his ascent to the governorship and later the U.S. presidency. His offices were located within this very building, marking a significant chapter in his political journey.
Built between 1955 and 1957, the Justice Building replaced the court's former space in the State Capitol. Initially planned as a two-story H-shaped structure, it gained a circular, glass-enclosed courtroom annex in 1976. With its narrow stone piers and shallow dome, the annex echoes a Roman tempietto while blending modernist and classical influences, despite early public criticism.
The Justice Building expanded significantly over time, with a major 2001 addition featuring a limestone and granite west wing. Designed in a classical style, it includes a two-story portico with six Doric columns, blending seamlessly with the mid-century modernist elements of the original building.
The latest expansion of the Arkansas Supreme Court Justice Building extends its North and South wings with a modern take on the Capitol's bold forms. Emphasizing transparency, the design features an eastern facade with fins symbolizing the justices, offering a clear view of the State Capitol to highlight judicial-legislative balance.
A new public entrance leads to an educational center, offering views of the Capitol and insights into the judiciary’s role in democracy. The expansion honors the mid-century design while enhancing the building’s function as a courthouse and public institution, reflecting tradition, modernity, and justice.
