Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Kovil (Waterfall Hilltop Temple), George Town

Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Kovil (Waterfall Hilltop Temple), George Town

The majestic Waterfall Hilltop Temple, unveiled to the public in 2012, offers splendid panoramic views of George Town. While its primary purpose is to cater to the Hindu community of Penang, it has also become a popular tourist hotspot. Its striking cream-colored seven-story "gopuram" stands tall, commanding attention from afar.

To reach this lofty abode, devotees and tourists alike must ascend 513 steps. But fear not – a separate set of steps is provided for those descending, preventing congestion during peak periods like the Thaipusam Festival, which draws crowds of up to 700,000 devotees.

Along the ascent, visitors encounter the old Dewan Arulmamani Arumugam Pillai, dating back to 1956, and another temple nestled 30 meters below the new hilltop sanctuary. Originally located at the base of a waterfall within the Penang Botanic Gardens, this temple relocated to its current site in 1915 following the construction of the Waterfall Reservoir.

At the foot of the 513 steps stands yet another temple, the Arulmigu Sree Ganeshar, erected in the 1950s and refurbished once or twice since. Each step of the journey unveils layers of history and spirituality, making the ascent as enriching as the destination itself.
