Asansör (Elevator), Izmir
The Asansör, meaning "elevator" in Turkish and derived from the French word ascenseur, is a historic landmark in the Karataş quarter of İzmir’s Konak district. Built in 1907 by the wealthy Jewish banker and trader Nesim Levi Bayraklıoğlu, this structure was designed to bridge the sharp elevation difference between the lower coastal neighborhood and the hillside above. It provided a much-needed connection for both people and goods, effectively linking the two districts separated by the cliffs.
The elevator was initially operated manually but has undergone several modernizations since. In 1985, it was converted to run-on electricity, preserving its original charm while meeting contemporary safety standards. Its distinctive brick façade, constructed with materials imported from Marseille, stands as a testament to its European inspiration.
The surrounding area, including Asansör Street—later renamed Darío Moreno Street in honor of the famed singer who once resided there—exudes a nostalgic atmosphere. As one of the few historical elevators that have survived into modern times, the Asansör evokes a sense of fascination and admiration akin to Lisbon’s Santa Justa lift, a similar engineering marvel built for geographical necessity.
Today, Asansör is not only a functional piece of history but also a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can enjoy a classic elevator ride up to a charming rooftop café that offers panoramic views of İzmir and the Aegean coastline. What started as a public service initiative has become a cherished symbol of the city’s rich multicultural heritage and architectural ingenuity.
