Auckland Zoo, Auckland (must see)
Auckland Zoo is a 16.35-hectare (40-acre) animal park located in Auckland, near Western Springs park and not far from the city's downtown area.
The zoo was established in 1922 but faced early challenges, particularly related to the health of its animals. By 1930, a significant collection of animals had been gathered, and a zoological society was formed. During World War II, the zoo went through a period of consolidation and was led by Lt. Col. Sawer. After the war, the collection expanded, and in the 1950s, chimpanzees were brought in for public entertainment, though this practice ended in 1964.
In 1973, the zoo expanded into the neighboring Western Springs park. From the late 1980s to the present, the zoo has been phasing out older exhibits and replacing them with modern enclosures. In 2011, the zoo opened its largest development, Te Wao Nui, which showcases native New Zealand plants and animals.
The zoo is divided into sections based on the geographic origin of the exhibited species, their biological classification, or the type of environment they come from. The zoo plays a role in conservation efforts, particularly for New Zealand species, as well as in research and education. It features modern facilities like the New Zealand Centre for Conservation Medicine (NZCCM).
Why You Should Visit:
Lots of variety, from the range of animals to the 'behind the scenes' for both adults and kids.
Although this zoo has plenty of animals, they all have beautiful spacious enclosures and are put in context.
There's interesting information about plants, animals, insects, birds, etc. The zoo is also landscaped very nicely and is quite beautiful in places.
Tip:
Animals are sometimes chilling in their private enclosures so don't be too disappointed if you don't actually see some of them.
If you are on a kiwi hunt and want a chance to see this unique bird, be sure to visit closer to closing time. The kiwi room will be quieter and it should come out to eat.
