Augustiner Keller Beer Garden, Munich

Augustiner Keller Beer Garden, Munich

Augustiner-Keller is a well-established dining establishment and beer garden located in the Maxvorstadt district of Munich. This restaurant has a rich history, dating back to the early 19th century, and it has earned its reputation as one of Munich's most popular beer gardens. Augustiner-Keller, situated on Arnulfstraße, proudly serves beer from Augustiner-Bräu, which happens to be the oldest brewery in Munich.

The origins of this restaurant trace back to a beer storage facility mentioned in a Munich city plan from 1812. This storage facility was associated with the now-defunct Büchl-Brauerei brewery. In 1842, a city plan designated a beer garden offering both food and beverages on what was then known as Salzstraße. Despite its proximity to the former Munich execution grounds on the Marsfeld, this beer garden was considered one of the city's most picturesque spots. In 1842, Georg Knorr assumed ownership of the establishment, leading to its renaming as Knorrkeller. In 1862, the brewery was acquired by Josef Wagner, a brewer from Augustiner, and the restaurant adopted its present name in 1880.

Significant renovations were carried out in 1896, resulting in the expansion of the beer garden to accommodate 5,000 guests. Additionally, a larger festival hall and an upgraded kitchen were added to the premises. Fast forward to 2010, when Christian and Petra Vogler, a married couple, took over the reins as the new tenants of Augustiner-Keller. It's worth noting that a remarkable 208-year-old horse chestnut tree graces the beer garden, adding to the charm and character of this historic establishment.

Still, when it comes to travel mementos, albeit material they are, memories and experiences are primarily what these little (or not so little) tokens are all about.
