Avenida Revolucion (Revolution Avenue), Tijuana
Revolution Avenue is a well-known thoroughfare in northwestern Mexico. Historically, it connected Tijuana with the national highway to Tecate and led from the San Ysidro customs to the Agua Caliente Casino. Its popularity peaked between the 1980s and 2000s, even making an appearance in an episode of The Simpsons. It gained popularity during the Prohibition Era (1920-1933) when Americans crossed the border for legal alcohol.
The avenue starts at the intersection with International Avenue, marked by the sign "Here begins the Homeland," and ends at the Tijuana Tower, where it becomes Agua Caliente Boulevard. Over the years, Revolution Avenue has experienced significant changes. It once served as the main attraction of Tijuana, known for its vibrant nightlife and famous bars like La Ballena, which boasted the largest bar in the world.
Revolution Avenue was initially mapped out in 1889 by engineer and architect Ricardo Orozco. Originally named Olvera, it was designed to be a mixed-use main street with curio shops, a hotel, a restaurant, and several bars. By 1910, the avenue had developed into a bustling area with about a hundred houses.
The food scene on Revolution Avenue has always been diverse, featuring Mexican, American, and Chinese cuisines. Notably, the Caesar salad originated here, and the roasted beef marrow is also well-known.
