Baku Railway Station, Baku

Baku Railway Station, Baku

Baku Railway Station is the central rail hub of Baku, strategically situated in the Nesimi district. This key location places it approximately 3 km northeast of Baku's historical center, enhancing its accessibility and importance in the region.

The station complex is notable for its historical and architectural significance. The original station building was constructed in 1880, coinciding with the inauguration of the Baku-Tbilisi railway. This building was designed in the Moorish Revival style, a choice reflecting the ornate and distinct architectural preferences of the period.

The railway station experienced significant expansions and renovations over the years. In 1926, the second station complex, known as Sabunchu Station, was constructed to accommodate the electrified Baku–Sabunchu railway. This building also featured Moorish Revival architecture, maintaining the aesthetic continuity of the railway infrastructure.

Further integrating the city’s transportation network, the 28 May metro station was established in 1967 and linked to the Sabunchu Station via a pedestrian tunnel, facilitating easy transitions between rail and metro services for commuters.

The station underwent a major overhaul in 1977, which included the construction of a modern station building adjacent to the historical Sabunchu Station. This development not only expanded the station's capacity but also blended modern architectural elements with the historical style.

The most recent renovation in 2017 has ensured that Baku Railway Station continues to serve as a vital junction for not only suburban and inter-city rail services but also for international railway connections, reinforcing Baku's role as a central transit hub in the region.
