BankWest Tower, Perth
The Bank West Tower, standing 52 stories tall, was finished in 1988, making it a prominent office building. It reaches a height of 214 meters to its roof and 247 meters including its communications antenna. Initially, it held the title of Perth's tallest building until 1992, when Central Park surpassed it in height. Despite this, it still ranks as the city's second tallest as of 2009. The tower, made of concrete, boasts a unique triangular design.
Before the tower's construction, there was controversy as the site was previously occupied by the Palace Hotel. Some opposed the demolition of the hotel to make room for the tower. However, businessman Alan Bond acquired the site and proceeded with the tower's construction while aiming to preserve much of the Palace Hotel's structure. Interestingly, the tower served as the headquarters for Bond's companies until they faced financial collapse.
Architects Cameron Chisolm & Nicol were tasked with designing the tower, with a key directive being to ensure that office spaces maximized views of the Swan River. They opted for a triangular shape for the building, citing its compatibility with open-plan office layouts and its ability to allow natural light to reach most areas of the working floors.
