Banteay Kdei, Siem Reap
Banteay Kdei is a Buddhist temple constructed during the reign of Jayavarman VII. It follows the Bayon architectural style and is smaller and less complex than Ta Prohm and Preah Khan. The temple's structures are enclosed within two walls and feature concentric galleries, towers, and a cloister. However, the temple has suffered from the use of inferior materials and poor construction techniques, leading to its current dilapidated state.
Throughout history, Banteay Kdei served as a Buddhist monastery and was occasionally occupied by monks until the 1960s. Recognizing its historical importance, a restoration project is underway to renovate the temple's towers, corridors, and other areas. Some sections are inaccessible to visitors due to ongoing restoration work.
The original purpose and dedication of the temple remain unknown as the foundation stele has not been found. The temple bears the visible damage of 13th-century vandalism, including defaced Buddha images. Visitors are encouraged to combine their trip to Banteay Kdei with a visit to the nearby Srah Srang reservoir, located opposite the east entrance.
Despite its current state, Banteay Kdei Temple remains significant within the Angkor complex, showcasing the architectural achievements of the Khmer Empire. Ongoing restoration efforts aim to preserve its historical and cultural value for future generations to appreciate.
