Barrister House, Saskatoon

Barrister House, Saskatoon

Nestled on 6th Avenue North in Saskatoon’s Central Business District, the Barrister House is a striking heritage landmark that fuses early 20th-century charm with the city’s contemporary legal heartbeat. Originally built in 1908–09 as the Schrader House, it was once home to Udo Schrader, a livestock farmer turned real estate developer, and his wife Helen, a cultured and educated figure in Saskatoon society. Later, it became the residence of their daughter Leonora and her husband, Philip McMeans-Saskatoon's first city prosecutor.

The building’s architecture nods to midwestern U.S. Victorian/Missouri-style design, with its broad porch, bay windows, classical balcony, exposed interior beams, and the elegance of beveled piano windows. Some of the building materials-such as columns from the old Saskatoon Club verandah-were repurposed in its construction, adding a layer of historic continuity. Its character was faithfully preserved during a restoration in 1987.

Now a municipally protected site, Barrister House enjoys heritage safeguards that ensure its preservation, with a 60-day hold placed on any demolition permits to allow for heritage review.

Since 2016–17, the building has housed The Barrister Group, a litigation-focused law firm with roots dating back to 2000 under the name KMP Law. After rebranding and relocating into this historic home, the firm established itself as a fixture in Saskatoon’s legal landscape. Their services span personal injury, real estate, family law, SGI torts, commercial litigation, and estates.

Today, Barrister House remains a proud testament to Saskatoon's architectural heritage, blending the craftsmanship of a bygone era with the pursuit of justice in the modern day.
