Basilica di San Francesco (Basilica of St. Francis), Bologna

Basilica di San Francesco (Basilica of St. Francis), Bologna

Situated to the west of the bustling city center lies the Basilica of Saint Francis, offering a serene retreat from urban life. Despite enduring significant damage from Allied bombings in 1943 and subsequent restoration efforts, this Franciscan church stands as a testament to beauty and resilience. Originally completed in 1263, its Gothic facade has been meticulously rebuilt, complemented by an exquisite altarpiece and Renaissance tombs. Of particular note is the tomb of Pope Alexander V, who passed away in Bologna in 1410, located in the left aisle. Crafted by Venetian artists Pier Paolo and Jacobello dalle Masegne in 1393, the intricate marble altarpiece portrays saints and scenes from the life of Saint Francis with remarkable naturalism.

Other highlights include the apse with its two bell towers and the graceful arches of radial chapels. At the base of these chapels lie the 13th-century tombs of commentators Accursio, Odofredo, and Rolandino de' Romanzi. The complex also houses the Library of Saint Francis, encompassing a collection of 39,000 volumes and brochures, along with the Rubbiani Archive and the historical Archive of the Bolognese Province of the Conventual Minor Friars. Additionally, visitors can explore the Musical Archive within the premises.
