Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, Houston

Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, Houston (must see)

The Bayou Bend Gardens is one of the most beautiful places in downtown Houston. The Main house and gardens sit on 14 acres of land. It was first built in 1927.

The grounds are the brainchild of Ms. Ima Hogg, who was a famous philanthropist in the area. Sadly, though, people used to make fun of her name, as it is a pun. Perhaps that is why they did not name the place after her. Her father was, at one time, the governor of Texas. The house on the grounds used to be her home and is filled with one of the most beautiful antique collections imaginable. The gardens were started while she was still living in the building.

The best time of year to go is March and April when the azaleas are in full blossom. In fact, the grounds are part of the famous Azalea Trail of Texas. The house is still displayed in the period, so you will get a chance to see what life was like on the prairie in her time. The Museum of Fine Arts of Houston is now in charge of the property.

Why You Should Visit:
The gardens are wonderful and have a good amount of walking paths; also, there are lockers to store your belongings (free of charge).
There are multiple options as far as tickets go, e.g. for about $5 extra, you can purchase the House tour (approx. 90min long) together.
Ima Hogg did a lot for the culture of Houston and it walking where she walked is actually quite nice.

Tip:
Choose the printed material if you are on a self-tour, as trying to use your cell phone is distracting, and you still have to reference a paper for the appropriate numbers.

Historic Downtown Walking Tour

Just like the other major Texan city of Dallas, Houston has been described as a concrete jungle (or a spaghetti bowl) of endless freeways. Yet, it somehow manages to tower over the stream of engines, with a glittering uber-American presence. There is much to...  view more
