Belfry Theater, Victoria
The Belfry Theatre, located in the Fernwood neighbourhood of Victoria, is an esteemed theatre and theatre company known for its commitment to producing contemporary Canadian works. Housed in a stunning converted nineteenth-century church, the theatre building itself is an architectural gem designed by Thomas Hooper.
Originally constructed between 1887 and 1892, the building served as the Emmanuel Baptist Church of Fernwood until 1974. Established in 1874, the congregation acquired the land at Fernwood and Gladstone and dedicated the Spring Ridge Chapel on February 6, 1887. Reverend Peter H. McEwen oversaw the construction, which finished in 1892. The church remained active for 79 years until April 4, 1971, when the congregation moved to a new sanctuary in Sannich.
In 1974, Blair Shakel rented out a chapel in the Belfry Theatre building, transforming it into a theater. The next year, Don Shipley established the Springridge Cultural Centre, inspired by Vancouver's East Cultural Centre. Pat Armstrong later joined as co-director, and the Belfry Cultural Centre eventually became The Belfry.
The Belfry Theatre, established in 1977, has a diverse history of 312 theatrical productions. Over 233 plays were Canadian works, including 47 premieres. It has played a vital role in supporting and promoting Canadian talent, enriching the country's theatre scene.
The Belfry Theatre has premiered notable plays like Dan Needles's Wingfield Farm series, Morris Panych's "Vigil," and Michele Riml's "Sexy Laundry" and "On the edge." These productions reflect Canada's diverse voices and stories, showcasing the theater's dedication to innovative and thought-provoking works.
