Belmont Park, San Diego

Belmont Park, San Diego (must see)

Belmont Park is an oceanfront theme park that is located on Mission Bay. It is a very historic part of the city also. John Spreckels, who was a famous sugar tycoon, opened the amusement park in 1925 and called the location the Mission Beach Amusement Center. Besides providing fun to the local population, the Spreckels used the park as a way to sell real estate in the area.

There are tons of rides to enjoy, some of which remain from the very beginning of the park. One of the true historic highlights of the place is the Giant Dipper, which is a real wooden roller coaster. In fact, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You will also want to see the indoor swimming pool, which is called the Plunge. At one point in history, it was an all saltwater pool. There is a famous painting here now also, called the Whaling Wall, which depicts the orcas that come to Point Loma each year. There are also enough modern style rides to thrill any kid.

Parking is free at the park. It is open to the public from 11:00 a.m. until dark. The hours of closing, though, vary a bit based on holidays and the time of year.

Why You Should Visit:
Fun place for families with kids, but also with a variety of restaurants towards the boardwalk that are geared for the adults. Close to the city, or sea world – tons of lodging bars and things to do.

Tip:
Don't miss the monster ice cream cones with amazing flavors!
