Beth Israel Synagogue, Izmir
The Beth Israel Synagogue is a significant Jewish place of worship located on Mithatpaşa Street in the Turgut Reis neighborhood, within the Karataş quarter of İzmir. It is the largest synagogue in the city, standing alongside another major congregation, the Shaar Hashamaym Synagogue.
The synagogue's history dates back to the early 20th century. Construction began in 1905 after the local Jewish community obtained state permission, with an edict from Sultan Abdulhamid II that allowed the Jews living in the Karataş neighborhood to build a new place of worship. The synagogue was completed in 1907, making it the first building in İzmir to reflect Italian architectural influences. This influence is evident in the synagogue’s linear plan, reminiscent of a church layout, with its main hall accessible through an entrance hall and surrounded by a "U"-shaped gallery known as the Mehizah.
The Beth Israel Synagogue is renowned for its architectural elegance and exquisite wooden decorations. The two-piece Tevah (Bimah) and the Ehal Akodesh (Holy Ark) are crafted from solid mahogany by master artisans of the period, contributing to its reputation as the most beautiful synagogue in İzmir. Its upper gallery currently serves as a museum, showcasing the synagogue's rich history and heritage.
Today, the religious and cultural life of İzmir's Jewish community centers around the Beth Israel Synagogue and the newer Shaar Hashamaym Synagogue in the Alsancak district, which also houses the offices of the local rabbinate.
