Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Ottawa
Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, situated in the Glebe neighborhood of Ottawa, is a Catholic place of worship. The establishment of this parish dates back to 1913 when a humble chapel served as the initial building. The present structure, located on Fourth Avenue, was constructed in 1931.
In 1920, the Blessed Sacrament parish honored the memory of its members and comrades who served in the Canadian overseas military forces by erecting a brass memorial plaque. The unveiling took place on Armistice Day, November 11.
When the current building was erected, its modest design without embellishments caused some local controversy as it appeared more reminiscent of Protestant architecture than Catholic. However, over time, the building gained recognition for its contemporary design. It was created by John Gibb Morton and exemplifies the Perpendicular Gothic style.
In remembrance of the parishioners who sacrificed their lives in World War II, a memorial organ was revealed on Christmas Day in 1946. Similar to other historic churches in Ottawa, Blessed Sacrament faced challenges due to declining church attendance. For several years, it served as the spiritual home for Ottawa's Hungarian Catholic community until its departure in 1997.
The church's parish boundaries have remained unchanged, encompassing the northern and western areas of the Rideau Canal, the southern region of the Queensway, and the eastern section of Booth Street.
