Boggo Road Gaol (Jail), Brisbane
H.M. Prison Brisbane, commonly referred to as Boggo Road Gaol, served as the primary correctional facility in Queensland from the 1880s through the 1980s. By the time it was shut down, it had gained notoriety due to its substandard living conditions and frequent outbreaks of riots. Situated on Annerley Road within Dutton Park, an inner southern neighborhood of Brisbane, it stands today as the sole surviving intact prison in Queensland that reflects the penal practices of the 19th century.
Although it was officially designated as "Brisbane Gaol," it was more commonly known as "Boggo Road," a name derived from the original moniker of Annerley Road. Subsequently, a new street, formed in 1996, was given the name Boggo Road.
Boggo Road Gaol was established in 1883. Initially, it primarily functioned as a temporary holding facility for individuals serving short sentences or awaiting trial, but it gained notoriety for its use as an execution site. In 1903, a distinct women's prison was purpose-built, leading to the closure of H.M. Gaol for Women nearly two decades later, with its female inmates relocated to another part of the prison complex.
During the 1920s, male inmates from the Saint Helena Island prison in Moreton Bay were transferred to the former women's prison. This section was renamed Number Two Division and became home to individuals serving the longest sentences, including killers, murderers, and violent offenders. Three cellblocks within this division housed "Lifers," and Boggo Road Gaol soon earned a notorious reputation.
