Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah

Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah (must see)

Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah is renowned for its picturesque setting and rich history. Situated on a scenic bluff overlooking the Wilmington River, east of Savannah, the cemetery spans nearly 160 acres, making it the largest municipal cemetery in the city. Its origins date back to 1846 when it was first established as Evergreen Cemetery by John Mullryne and was privately owned.

The transformation of Bonaventure Cemetery began in 1907 when the City of Savannah purchased Evergreen Cemetery and renamed it. The cemetery's layout reflects a traditional Victorian design, characterized by winding pathways, abundant trees, and grassy areas. This design not only offers a final resting place but also provides a serene environment for families to gather, often for picnics, while also serving as a space of comfort and solace for those mourning their loved ones.

The entrance to Bonaventure Cemetery, located on Bonaventure Road, immediately introduces visitors to its historical significance with the large and ornate tomb of William Gaston, a notable Savannah merchant. The cemetery gained widespread prominence following its feature in John Berendt's 1994 novel "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," and the subsequent movie adaptation directed by Clint Eastwood. These cultural references have contributed to the cemetery's allure and recognition, attracting numerous visitors intrigued by its historical and cultural significance.

Why You Should Visit:
Ethereal, beautiful, picturesque, and unlike anyplace else. Stunning architecture in the gravestones and the Spanish moss can leave you with some equally stunning photos.

Tip:
Although you can attend tours for this place (check online for the schedule), you can avoid the crowds if you go on your own after lunch (2-4 pm).
The place is huge so plan to spend at least 2 hours, but keep in mind that there is little to no protection from the elements and it's a cemetery, not a mall, so plan ahead for any personal needs.
