Kunstmuseum Bonn (Bonn Museum of Modern Art), Bonn

The Bonn Museum of Modern Art stands as a prominent venue for Rhenish Expressionism and post-1945 German art. Established in 1947, it has been housed in its modernist building since 1992. Spanning roughly 4,000 square meters of exhibition space, it is considered one of the largest museums of contemporary art in Germany.

The building was designed by the architectural team BJSS, mainly Axel Schultes and Jürgen Pleuser. It features a bright, geometric layout that plays with squares, triangles, and circles. Three entrances welcome visitors into the space, and a central amphitheater-style staircase links the various galleries in an open, flowing manner.

The museum's holdings include between 7,500 and 9,000 pieces, with a focus on German artists. It houses the most comprehensive public collection of works by August Macke, as well as important pieces by Max Ernst and other artists from the Rhenish Expressionist movement. Postwar German art is also well represented, with works by influential figures such as Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter, and Sigmar Polke, along with photography and video-based media.

In addition to its permanent collection, the museum offers a range of temporary exhibitions, often curated in conversation with its core holdings. It also runs educational programs, public workshops, and features outdoor installations that interact with the building’s architecture.
