Borj Nord Fortress / Museum of Arms, Fes

Borj Nord Fortress / Museum of Arms, Fes

Similar to its counterpart to the south, the Borj Nord fortress, perched on the hillside overlooking Bab Bou Jeloud, was constructed in the late 16th century by the Saadi dynasty, though its purpose was more about controlling the people of Fes rather than solely defending them. As one of the largest defense structures surrounding the city, it stands out for its incorporation of European-style military architecture during the gunpowder age.

Carefully maintained over the centuries, Borj Nord now serves as the home of the country's Museum of Arms. Open daily, except on Tuesdays, the museum houses an impressive collection. Visitors can marvel at daggers adorned with precious stones, the formidable arsenals of various sultans, and the centerpiece attraction: a cannon measuring five meters in length and weighing twelve tonnes, said to be used during the Battle of the Three Kings. From the vantage point of the fortress, one can enjoy unparalleled views, offering a great panorama of the cityscape.

Fes New Town Walking Tour

Created by the French in the early 20th century, Ville Nouvelle (New Town) is a relatively modern central district of Fez. A far cry from the sensory overload provided by the old Medina, this neighborhood was originally designed to accommodate foreigners and affluent Moroccans only.
