Bosco di San Francesco (Forest of St. Francis), Assisi
Nestled at the base of the grand Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi, this verdant oasis stands as a serene sanctuary amidst the city. Rich in history and enveloped in tranquility, it beckons pilgrims making their journey to the basilica, offering glimpses into the past with each step. Here, remnants of bygone eras abound: the weathered remnants of an ancient monastery, the silhouette of a 14th-century defensive tower, and the timeless charm of the Romanesque church of Santa Croce. A once-active mill, now a cozy trattoria, invites travelers to rest and rejuvenate. Nearby, the echoes of a long-forgotten hospital that tended to the sick and pilgrims linger in the air.
But this sanctuary's story doesn't end in the Middle Ages. A more recent addition, courtesy of the 20th century, comes in the form of a conceptual creation by artist Michelangelo Pistoletto. Aptly named the "Third Paradise", it stands tall atop the landscape, comprised of 121 olive trees arranged in a mesmerizing pattern. Three large circular elements intertwine, symbolizing the harmonious union between heaven and earth. At its heart lies a towering pole, reaching towards the sky.
Visitors are encouraged to wander the winding paths between the olive trees, immersing themselves in the ambiance and becoming part of its narrative. Here, amidst the serene beauty of nature, one can contemplate the delicate balance between humanity and the environment, embodied by the concept of the "Third Paradise".
