Botanical Garden, Brno
The Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science at Masaryk University in Brno is a rich and diverse botanical institution that combines education, research, and public outreach. Founded in 1922 by Professor Josef Podpěra, the garden has grown significantly and now covers an expansive outdoor area of approximately 1.5 hectares, in addition to 1,100 square meters of greenhouses that house collections of tropical and subtropical plant species.
The garden is home to around 2,500 taxa in both the greenhouses and the outdoor sections, making it an important resource for plant conservation and education. Each plant is carefully labeled with name tags, and visitors can benefit from educational panels and audio guides available in both Czech and English. The garden also features an interactive map and detailed lists of tree species, making it a valuable tool for both casual visitors and researchers.
In addition to its extensive plant collections, the garden also manages the greenery in the publicly accessible area of the faculty at Kotlářské, which spans approximately 4.5 hectares. This area primarily features collections of tree species, with over 1,000 individual trees representing more than 520 taxa, all identified with name tags.
The Botanical Garden offers guided tours of the greenhouses for schools and other groups, enhancing its educational mission. It also hosts several exhibitions throughout the year, including carnivorous plants in May, succulents in September, and tropical and subtropical plants in October. A variety of other events, such as a Garden Party in August and participation in the annual Scientists' Night in October, further engage the public.
Additionally, the garden houses a specialist library open to the public, and over the years, it has published several guides and educational materials, including a publication celebrating the garden’s 90th anniversary in 2012. These resources, along with the garden’s commitment to education and public engagement, make it a cornerstone of botanical study and appreciation in the region.
