Botanischer Garten / Palmengarten, Frankfurt (must see)
The Johann Wolfgang Goethe University is responsible for the ownership and upkeep of a 7-hectare garden primarily intended for the study of indigenous German and global plant life.
Frankfurt's initial botanical garden was originally established by the Senckenburg Foundation, which operated a public hospital and designed the garden for researching and cultivating medicinal plants and herbs. Eventually, a new location was chosen adjacent to the public Palmengarten park, leading to the relocation of the Botanical Garden in 1907. The development of the current facility began in 1931 and was finalized after World War II in 1958. In 1963, the university added a greenhouse and laboratory to support student needs.
Presently, the garden boasts a diverse collection of more than 5000 plant species, encompassing native German flora, Mediterranean, Asian, and North American plants, as well as endangered species. Additionally, there is an exhibition highlighting the cultural significance of plants throughout history. For both casual visitors and dedicated botany enthusiasts, a visit to the Botanical Garden offers an enjoyable and educational experience.
Why You Should Visit:
Perfect for a picnic on the lawn, a nice boat ride on the lake, or just enjoying waterfalls.
Lots of playgrounds, plant exhibitions – but they also do events (like concerts) that are worth checking out.
Tip:
If you love gardens, be sure to check out both the Botanischer Garten AND the Palmengarten.
Adult entrance to Palmengarten costs €7.5 (cash only).
