Botanischer Garten Mainz (Mainz Botanical Garden), Mainz
The Mainz Botanical Garden, part of the Johannes Gutenberg University, was established between 1946 and 1955 on land previously used for agriculture and military training. It was founded by botanist Wilhelm Troll, with support from Max Top. Today, the garden spans about 10 hectares and houses approximately 8,500 plant species from all over the world, showcased in both open fields and greenhouses.
The garden has undergone several expansions, starting in 1948 with its first greenhouse. Noteworthy developments include the addition of the highest greenhouse (the “connector”) in 1954, the creation of a replica of the local Mainz sand habitat in 1986, and the construction of new succulent and tropical houses in 1997 and 1999, respectively.
Serving as both a research and educational center, the garden plays a crucial role in preserving biological diversity, offering vocational training for gardeners, and hosting public cultural events. Regular guided tours are available throughout the year.
In 2010, the “Green School” was introduced as an extracurricular learning space, where students of all ages can engage with topics like biodiversity and its conservation. One of the garden’s most iconic moments occurred in 2014 when an Agave salmiana bloomed for the first time, marking a significant event in the garden’s history, as it was the first large agave to flower there since its founding.
