Bridge Monument (Tan Kim Seng Bridge), Melaka

The Tan Kim Seng Bridge is a significant landmark in Melaka, spanning the Malacca River. This bridge serves as a crucial connection between Dutch Square and the Chinatown district, specifically at Jalan Hang Jebat, commonly known as Jonker Street. The bridge is named after Tan Kim Seng, a prominent 19th-century Straits Chinese philanthropist and successful trader.

Tan Kim Seng, born in Melaka in 1805, was of Hokkien descent. His wealth and success in trading allowed him to contribute significantly to the community. Besides donating the bridge to the town, he also provided land for the establishment of the Chinese cemetery. His philanthropic efforts extended beyond Melaka; after moving to Singapore in 1840, he continued his charitable activities. In Singapore, he is commemorated with the Tan Kim Seng Fountain and Kim Seng Road, and he founded the Chinese Free School, one of the better schools in the early 19th century. The Kim Seng Bridge in Singapore is also named in his honor.

The original Tan Kim Seng Bridge was destroyed by the British in 1942 to impede the advance of Japanese troops during World War II. The bridge that stands today was reconstructed by the British after the war.

Adjacent to the Tan Kim Seng Bridge is the Tan Beng Swee Clocktower, named after his son. This clock tower was built by Tan Kim Seng's grandson, Tan Jiak Kim, in memory of his father.

The Tan Kim Seng Bridge not only serves as a functional structure in Melaka but also stands as a historical monument reflecting the legacy of Tan Kim Seng and his contributions to both Melaka and Singapore.
