Brighton War Memorial, Brighton
The Brighton War Memorial, located in The Old Steine Gardens in Brighton, is a significant monument dedicated to the men and women of Brighton who lost their lives in the First World War. Designed by John W. Simpson and unveiled in 1922, the memorial is an elegant structure embodying the Classical architectural style, inspired by the design of a Roman water garden.
The memorial features three main elements: a large square pool with a central fountain, a colonnade of stone columns, and two bronze pylons inscribed with the names of the fallen. The pool's unique geometric design includes chamfered and re-entrant corners. On the north side, a U-shaped colonnade forms the backdrop, with a central temple-like structure marked by a tall stone panel inscribed with theatres of war, topped by a small dome. Inside, a bronze plaque and stone altar table honor the fallen.
The names of 2,600 individuals (2,597 men and 3 women) from Brighton who perished during the war are engraved on two four-sided pillars located at the northwest and northeast corners of the colonnade. These pillars not only record the surname and initials of the fallen but also include an additional 33 names added to the top and bottom margins over time.
The memorial is a poignant and powerful tribute to those who served and sacrificed their lives during the First World War, serving as a place of reflection and remembrance for the people of Brighton and visitors alike.
