Brno Technical Museum, Brno
The Technical Museum in Brno (TMB) is a Czech state museum that specializes in the history of science and technology, with a particular focus on the regions of Moravia and Silesia. Established as an independent entity in 1961, the museum has its origins in earlier efforts dating back to 1924, when a committee was formed to create a technical museum in Moravia. The museum's direct predecessor, the Archive for the History of Industry, Trade and Technical Work, was founded in 1936, though it only became fully active in 1948.
Initially housed in the baroque premises of the former Voršilek monastery in Brno, the museum was nationalized in the 1950s and became part of the National Technical Museum in Prague. However, on January 1, 1961, the Brno branch gained independence, marking the official establishment of the Technical Museum in Brno. In the late 1990s, the museum relocated to a new building in the Královo Pole district of Brno, with its current address on Purkyňova Street. The museum opened its doors to the public at this location on June 5, 2003.
Today, the Technical Museum in Brno offers a rich array of 16 exhibits, along with a Technical Game Room that provides interactive, educational experiences related to the laws of physics and their practical applications. The museum also benefits from the contributions of voluntary collaborators, who assist in its documentation and research activities. Additionally, the museum operates an open-access library.
The museum functions as both an exhibition space and a research organization. Its experts focus on researching and documenting scientific and technological fields, developing collections, and undertaking internal and grant-funded projects. Research findings are shared through exhibitions and other presentations. A key feature is the Methodological Center for Conservation, which serves as the national hub for conserving and restoring museum collections in the Czech Republic, aiming to improve the protection and quality of care for movable cultural heritage.
