Broad Street Ministry, Philadelphia

Broad Street Ministry, located in the heart of Philadelphia, is a beacon of community service and support, particularly for the city's low-income residents and those experiencing housing insecurity. This innovative Christian faith community, housed in a historic building on Avenue of the Arts, was born from the architectural and spiritual legacy of two merging downtown Philadelphia churches in 1887: the Chambers and Wylie Memorial churches. Their union led to the creation of the Chambers-Wylie Memorial Presbyterian Church.

The church building, a masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture, was designed by the esteemed local architects Rankin & Kellogg. Its design draws inspiration from the Ripon Cathedral in Yorkshire, England, and features the exquisite stained-glass work of Nicola D’Ascenzo. Despite its grandeur and historical significance, the Chambers-Wylie Church closed its doors in 1999. The building briefly housed the University of the Arts before undergoing a transformation in 2005 when Rev. Bill Golderer opened the doors of the Broad Street Ministry.

Since its inception, Broad Street Ministry has been dedicated to embodying the Gospel's call for hospitality, justice, compassion, and artistic expression. It has developed a range of programs that significantly impact the lives of Philadelphia's vulnerable populations. This initiative goes beyond meals, serving 7,000 people annually with daily meals for 250, health services, personal care, clothing, therapeutic arts, and a mailing address for 3,000 guests without one.

Further expanding its reach, Broad Street Ministry is working in collaboration with the Philadelphia Department of Prisons. This partnership focuses on assisting formerly incarcerated individuals, helping them find employment and offering case management services. This reflects the Ministry's deep commitment to social justice and its active role in addressing the complex needs of Philadelphia's marginalized communities.
