Bronx Zoo, New York
Opened in 1899, this expansive metropolitan zoo spans an impressive 265 acres and houses over 10,000 animals from more than 700 species, proudly holding the title of the largest zoo in a metropolitan area in the United States. The zoo offers visitors the opportunity to observe exotic creatures in habitats that authentically replicate their native environments, often with just a moat or a glass wall separating you from the animals.
One of the highlights not to be missed is the Congo Gorilla Forest, an impressive 6,5-acre re-creation of a lush African rainforest. It is home to western lowland gorillas, as well as mandrills, okapis, and red river hogs. At Tiger Mountain, you can get remarkably close to Siberian tigers thanks to an open viewing shelter. To maximize your chances of seeing them active, plan your visit in the morning or afternoon when the big cats are less likely to be napping. Another captivating exhibit is "Madagascar!", which transports you to one of the world's most endangered habitats. Here, you can encounter six different species of lemurs and more.
For a mini-safari experience, hop on the Wild Asia Monorail between May and November (weather permitting). This immersive ride allows you to observe Asian elephants, Indo-Chinese tigers, Indian rhinoceroses, and other remarkable species. To avoid long queues later in the day, it's advisable to visit popular exhibits like the Congo Gorilla Forest early on. During winter, some outdoor exhibitions may have fewer animals on display, but there's still plenty to explore indoors.
Why You Should Visit:
This is more of a walking Safari than your typical zoo! You will be very impressed by the scale & size, and how much room the animals have to roam. You can definitely spend the entire day here.
Tip:
Keep in mind that certain exhibits may require an additional fee. If you wish to fully enjoy all that the zoo has to offer, consider purchasing the Total Experience ticket for comprehensive access.
There are several locations to purchase food/snacks/ice cream/beverages, or you can bring in your own food/drinks and eat at the Zoo's picnic areas.
